India plans to operationalise between 50 and 60 greenfield mines during the current financial year as part of efforts to boost domestic mineral production and strengthen critical mineral supply chains, as per news reports.

Greenfield Mine Development Gains Pace

Speaking at the Materials Recycling Association of India conference, Union Mines Secretary Piyush Goyal said that 36 mines, including 28 greenfield projects, were operationalised in FY26.

He also mentioned that 58 greenfield mines have been operationalised since the auction regime was introduced in 2015. The government now aims to significantly accelerate the pace of mine operationalisation during FY27.

Bids For Nickel and Lithium Processing Units Soon

The government is preparing a new scheme under which bids for setting up nickel and lithium processing units will be invited within the next three months.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities in critical mineral processing and reducing import dependence.

Exploration Targets Raised Beyond Original Goal

The government has revised its mineral exploration ambitions upward. While the original target was to complete 1,200 exploration projects by 2031, authorities now expect to undertake more than 2,000 projects by the end of the period.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has completed 571 exploration projects so far. An additional 300 projects are expected to be completed during the current fiscal year.

Private Sector Participation Gains Momentum

Against the target of auctioning 100 exploration blocks to the private sector by 2031, the government has already auctioned 56 blocks.

The number is expected to exceed 200 by the end of the target period, reflecting increasing private sector participation in mineral exploration.
