India added 4.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage capacity during the January-March 2026 quarter, according to reports citing Mercom India Research.
The addition was sharply higher than the 442.7 megawatt-hours (MWh) installed in the October-December 2025 quarter, taking the country's cumulative battery energy storage capacity to 5.9 GWh as of March 2026.
Standalone battery storage projects made up 73% of the installed capacity. Solar and wind projects with storage and round-the-clock supply capabilities accounted for 15%, while solar-plus-battery storage projects contributed 11%.
Other project types, including floating solar paired with storage, formed a very small share of the total capacity.
Rajasthan accounted for 42% of the country's installed energy storage capacity, the highest among states. Gujarat followed with a 25% share, while Maharashtra contributed 9%. Gujarat also had the largest standalone battery storage pipeline, with projects adding up to 10 GWh.
The overall energy storage development pipeline stood at 69 GWh by the end of the quarter. It included 41 GWh of standalone storage projects, 11 GWh of solar-plus-wind projects with storage, 9 GWh of solar-plus-energy storage projects and 6 GWh of renewable energy-plus-storage projects.
During the quarter, agencies issued tenders totalling 18 GW, compared with 12 GW in the previous quarter, while more than 4 GW of standalone storage projects were auctioned.
Apart from battery storage, the pumped storage project pipeline stood at 57.2 GW. Of the 7.2 GW installed capacity, 5.7 GW was operational as of March 2026.
