India and the United States have initiated a series of high-level discussions in New Delhi to manage the bilateral trade agreement, which was affected by recent shifts in US tariff regulations, as per news report. These talks aim to establish an interim trade pact before July 24, 2026.
The talks commenced with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
The objective is to counter the disruption caused by the U.S. administration’s temporary 10% import tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act, which are set to expire on July 24, 2026.
Earlier this year, on February 20, the US Supreme Court invalidated previous tariffs, leading to the imposition of these temporary measures. In response, the US adjusted its tariffs on Indian goods, reducing them to 18% and removing a previous 25% penalty tariff.
India has proposed to lower or eliminate tariffs on an array of American industrial and agricultural products like tree nuts, red sorghum, fruits, soybean oil, and spirits.
These moves aim to stimulate trade between the two nations and remove barriers that have previously impeded economic cooperation.

Piyush Goyal and Sergio Gor expressed optimism about the ongoing trade discussions via their social media channels. They highlighted the potential of concluding a new agreement that would expand economic cooperation and deepen the economic ties between the two countries.
In the context of the India-US trade talks, both nations are working towards finalising an interim trade agreement by July 24, 2026. This is significant against the backdrop of the US temporarily imposing a 10% tariff, which affects global trade partnerships.
