Tata Motors has announced another significant order of 148 electric buses from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). This follows a prior order of 921 electric buses under the ‘Grand Challenge’ initiative by Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL). Tata Motors subsidiary, TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd, will oversee the supply, operation, and maintenance of these buses for a 12-year period.

BMTC Expands Electric Fleet with Tata Motors

BMTC is enhancing its eco-friendly fleet with the inclusion of 148 additional Tata Starbus EVs, supported by funds from the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT). While CESL’s ‘Grand Challenge’ initiative allocated 1,500 e-buses for Bengaluru, BMTC inducted only 921 due to subsidy limits. The new buses will cost BMTC Rs 54 per km in operational expenses, lower than the Rs 65 per km cost of a non-AC diesel bus.

Tata Motors’ Recent Success with UPSRTC

The new BMTC order comes shortly after Tata Motors secured a substantial deal of 1,297 bus chassis from Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). This marks the third order in a year from UPSRTC, bringing Tata Motors’ total bus supply to the state to 3,500 units. These orders underscore Tata Motors’ leadership in the electric mobility segment, driven by innovative solutions like its low-floor, non-AC electric buses.
