Zydus Lifesciences has partnered with Apollo Hospitals to introduce the Shield™ Multi-Cancer Detection (MCD) test in India. The collaboration aims to improve access to advanced cancer screening by enabling the early detection of multiple cancers through a simple blood test.

Zydus and Apollo Hospitals Sign MoU

Zydus Lifesciences has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Apollo Hospitals to make the Shield™ Multi-Cancer Detection (MCD) test available across India.

The test has been developed by Guardant Health, a global precision oncology company, and will be offered in India under an exclusive agreement with Zydus.

The partnership aims to improve access to advanced cancer screening and promote early diagnosis, which can lead to better treatment outcomes.

What Is the Shield Multi-Cancer Detection Test?

The Shield™ MCD test is a blood-based screening test that uses methylation technology to detect signals linked to multiple types of cancer.

The test is designed for people aged 45 years and above who are at an average risk of developing cancer.

It can screen for 10 common cancers, including:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Oesophageal cancer
  • Gastric cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer

The test requires only a single blood sample, making cancer screening more convenient and less invasive.

Focus on Early Cancer Detection

Apollo Hospitals said early detection remains one of the most effective ways to improve cancer treatment outcomes. The hospital group believes expanding access to reliable screening can help identify cancer at an earlier and more treatable stage.

Zydus said the partnership reflects its commitment to strengthening cancer care in India by combining innovative diagnostics with greater public awareness about regular screening and preventive healthcare.

Guardant Health also noted that the test has the potential to support earlier clinical evaluation through a simple blood draw, helping transform cancer detection in the country.

Why the Partnership Matters

Cancer continues to be one of India's leading health challenges.

According to the companies, more than 1.41 million people were diagnosed with cancer in India in 2022, while over 900,000 deaths were linked to the disease.

Breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, while oral cancer is the most common cancer among men. Despite this, cancer screening rates remain low across many parts of the country, especially in northern, central and north-eastern regions.

FDA Breakthrough Device Designation

The Shield™ MCD test has received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Breakthrough Device Designation for detecting eight cancer types. This designation recognises the technology's potential to improve cancer screening but does not represent FDA approval or clearance for commercial use.
