India’s semiconductor push may soon see another major corporate entrant. Wipro Enterprises is exploring plans to enter the semiconductor sector, likely through the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) route, according to a report by the Economic Times.

The move remains at an early and exploratory stage, with the company reportedly evaluating potential technology partners before taking a formal step into semiconductor manufacturing. A person aware of the discussions told the publication that identifying a credible partner will be a key factor in determining whether the project proceeds.

The potential entry reflects growing interest among Indian conglomerates in semiconductor manufacturing and related supply chain opportunities as the government ramps up incentives under the India Semiconductor Mission.

Wipro Enterprises Evaluating OSAT Entry Strategy

According to people familiar with the matter, Wipro Enterprises is keen to diversify into the semiconductor ecosystem through chip assembly and testing services. OSAT facilities handle the crucial backend stages of semiconductor production, including packaging and testing of chips before they reach device manufacturers.

The company is currently scouting for a global technology partner capable of providing expertise in advanced semiconductor packaging. Industry experts note that without strong technology collaboration, achieving the required yield levels, reliability standards and operational efficiencies in semiconductor manufacturing can be challenging.

Indian Conglomerates Accelerate Semiconductor Investments

Wipro Enterprises’ potential entry comes at a time when several Indian business groups are rapidly investing in semiconductor infrastructure.

HCL recently began work on a ₹3,700 crore OSAT facility in Uttar Pradesh in partnership with Foxconn. The Tata Group is developing a ₹27,000 crore OSAT plant in Assam, while Murugappa Group-backed CG Semi has launched the first unit of its ₹7,600 crore OSAT project in Gujarat.

These investments are aligned with the government’s strategy to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem in India, covering chip design, manufacturing, assembly and testing.

Conclusion

While Wipro Enterprises has not announced a formal semiconductor project yet, its exploratory discussions highlight the growing momentum in India’s semiconductor ambitions. The final direction of the plan may also depend on the policy framework under the upcoming India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 and the level of incentives offered for new manufacturing investments.

If the company proceeds, it would add another significant corporate name to India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem, which is rapidly becoming a strategic priority for both industry and policymakers.
