Titagarh Rail Systems Limited has rolled out the 1st driverless metro trainset manufactured in India for the Ahmedabad Metro project, marking a key milestone in the country’s urban rail manufacturing journey.
The trainset has been built for Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation at Titagarh’s Passenger Rail Systems facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
The rollout ceremony in Kolkata was attended by Bhupendrabhai Patel, who described the moment as a reflection of India’s progress in indigenous infrastructure development. He said, “Today is a moment of pride as the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat is being realised by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited.”
The Chief Minister highlighted the rapid expansion of India’s metro network, noting that metro corridors have grown from 248 km to over 1,013 km, significantly transforming urban mobility across the country.
The driverless metro trainset has been engineered and manufactured in India with 70–75% local content by value. The trains feature stainless steel car bodies designed to be lightweight, durable and corrosion-resistant, while also improving energy efficiency and sustainability.
The trainsets are equipped with advanced Train Control and Management Systems enabling fully driverless operations. Passenger-centric design elements include modern amenities, enhanced safety features, ergonomic interiors and dedicated spaces for Persons with Reduced Mobility.
The interiors are styled with a Garba-inspired theme, reflecting Ahmedabad’s cultural heritage.
As per exchange filings, Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems, said, “We are deeply honoured to deliver a driverless metro trainset that has been engineered and manufactured in India.”
The driverless trains will operate on the Yellow Line corridor from Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, covering 23.8 km, along with the Violet Line branch connecting Gujarat National Law University to Pandit Deendayal Energy University and GIFT City, spanning an additional 5.4 km.
In total, the Ahmedabad Metro network will run across a 28.26 km elevated corridor connecting 22 stations.
