As per PIB report, Indian Railways has significantly improved its track speed potential, with 79% of its network now capable of supporting speeds of 110 kmph or more. This marks a substantial increase from 40% in 2014, reflecting extensive track upgrades over the past 11 years.
Indian Railways has undertaken comprehensive measures to enhance track speed potential. These upgrades include the use of 60 kg rails, wider base concrete sleepers, thick web switches, longer rail panels, and H Beam sleepers. Additionally, modern track renewal and maintenance machines have been deployed, along with interlocking of level crossing gates and intense monitoring of track geometry.
These efforts have resulted in a marked increase in the speed potential of railway tracks. As of November 2025, 79% of the network supports speeds of 110 kmph or more, a significant rise from 40% in March 2014.
The data provided by the Union Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlights the progress made. In 2014, 47,897 track km (60.4%) were below 110 kmph, 26,409 track km (33.3%) were between 110-130 kmph, and 5,036 track km (6.3%) were at 130 kmph or above. By 2025, the figures have shifted dramatically. Only 21,936 track km (20.7%) remain below 110 kmph, while 60,726 track km (57.5%) are between 110-130 kmph, and 23,010 track km (21.8%) are at 130 kmph or above.
