Tata Power has selected Odisha for its proposed ₹6,675 crore solar ingot and wafer manufacturing plant, ending its evaluation of locations for the project, as per The Economic Times news report.
The company noted that the decision was taken after comparing the support offered by different states, including incentives, power tariffs, and project-related infrastructure.
The facility will be set up at Gopalpur instead of Andhra Pradesh. Tata Power had been in discussions with the Odisha government on the investment for several months.
The manufacturing unit will have a planned capacity of 10 GW and will be built in 2 phases of 5 GW each. The 1st phase is scheduled to begin operations in January 2028, while the 2nd phase is expected to be commissioned about 6 months later.
The project site is located within the special economic zone being developed by Tata Steel at Gopalpur. Since the land had already been acquired, the company said it would be able to begin development without the delays usually associated with land acquisition.
The announcement comes alongside Tata Power's June quarter earnings. The company reported a consolidated net profit of ₹1,401 crore for the first quarter of FY27, compared with ₹1,262 crore in the corresponding period last year.
Revenue from operations increased to ₹19,051.26 crore from ₹18,035.07 crore a year earlier. Operating profit (EBITDA) stood at ₹4,013 crore, down 3% from the year-ago quarter.
Apart from the solar manufacturing project, Tata Power is continuing discussions on proposed nuclear power projects in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat.
Preliminary work, including soil testing and geotechnical studies, has already been carried out at potential sites.
The company expects to complete the land selection process within the next six to eight months. It is also evaluating reactor options with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), including 220 MW units and the standard 700 MW design.
