
Tata Communications has entered into a strategic collaboration with RailTel Corporation of India Ltd to strengthen India’s digital backbone for the AI era.
The partnership integrates RailTel’s nationwide fibre network with Tata Communications’ global connectivity, cloud and cybersecurity platforms to support next-generation digital services.
RailTel operates over 63,000 route km of optical fibre, connecting cities, towns, rural regions and more than 6,000 railway stations. It serves government departments, public sector organisations, banks, educational institutions and enterprises across India.
Through this collaboration, RailTel’s physical reach will combine with Tata Communications’ digital fabric to modernise network infrastructure, improve cyber protection and enable AI-driven digital operations.
Ministries, PSUs and enterprises using RailTel’s network are expected to benefit from stronger system resilience and faster connectivity, while citizen-facing services such as railway Wi-Fi, public broadband and digital governance platforms could see improved performance.
As per the exchange filings, Sanjai Kumar, Chairman and MD of RailTel, said the collaboration would help “strengthen that role” of connecting India by bringing “advanced capabilities” to modernise systems and improve resilience.
Sumeet Walia, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Tata Communications, said the partnership is focused on creating a “secure, smart, and sovereign future” and delivering “AI-ready infrastructure from the center to the edge.”
Tata Communications operates in over 190 countries and territories, serves 300 Fortune 500 companies and connects businesses to 80% of the world’s leading cloud providers.

By combining RailTel’s nationwide infrastructure with Tata Communications’ global digital ecosystem, the partnership seeks to reinforce India’s AI and cloud capabilities while strengthening the country’s broader digital transformation framework.
