On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Sugar stocks gained up to 11.5% as both retail and wholesale sugar prices approached all-time highs.

This increase in prices has positioned sugar as a more lucrative commodity than ethanol in India and Brazil, as per NDTV Profit report.

Shree Renuka Sugars and Dalmia Bharat in Focus

Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd. share price gained by 11.5% to ₹26. Dalmia Bharat Ltd too had gained 5.5%, reaching ₹477.70.

Apart from the above ones, other notable price movements were seen in Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd., which rallied by over 3% to ₹285.5, while EID Parry (India) Ltd. and Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd. rose by over 2% to ₹800 and ₹667, respectively.

Why Are Sugar Stock Price Rallying

As per the report, the share price gains was driven by domestic wholesale sugar prices surpassing ₹6,000 per quintal in cities like Kolkata and Kanpur, influenced by reduced monthly release quotas and dwindling mill inventories, as per news reports.

Global and Domestic Factors Affecting Sugar Prices

As per the report, globally, white sugar prices have reached a 15-month high due to tightening supplies. Europe's output is projected to be the lowest in a decade, and El Nino is likely to impact production in India and Thailand.

Brazil is also anticipated to have reduced production. India's inventories are on the lower side, and the crushing season may face delays.

Government's Consideration on Import Duties

As per the report, the Indian government is considering lowering or eliminating the 100% tax on sugar shipments to alleviate the soaring raw sugar prices. This development is crucial as India is the second-largest producer of sugar, and the upcoming festive season may further increase demand.

Conclusion

Sugar stocks surged with Shree Renuka Sugars rising 11.5% and Dalmia Bharat up 5.5% as wholesale prices exceeded ₹6,000 per quintal. Global supply constraints and domestic inventory issues contributed to the price hike.
