
SPML Infra Limited has been awarded a significant contract valued at ₹1,128 crore to develop a 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at NTPC Limited's Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar.
This project marks SPML Infra's first large-scale grid Battery Energy Storage System initiative.
The contract, awarded by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), involves the supply, civil works, and erection of a 250 MW/1,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System.
The system will include 5 MWh DC containers equipped with a Battery Management System and Thermal Management System, 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC & AC cables, a 220 kV switchyard, and all associated accessories.
The project is scheduled for completion over an 18-month period, followed by 15 years of operation and maintenance.
This project aims to integrate large-scale battery storage with existing thermal power infrastructure, enhancing peak load management, grid stability, and the efficient integration of renewable power sources.
As India's power networks evolve, Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming essential for a stable and responsive electricity grid.

Abhinandan Sethi, Managing Director of SPML Infra Limited, emphasised the importance of this project for the company. He stated that energy storage is now a core pillar of SPML Infra's growth strategy.
The collaboration with NTPC on this project is seen as both a privilege and a responsibility.
As of May 06, 2026, at 10:27 AM, SPML Infra share price on NSE was trading at ₹223.01 up by 4.29% from the previous closing price.
