Siemens Secures ₹263 Crore RVNL Contract for Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway Project

Siemens Ltd has secured an order worth approximately ₹263 crore from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) for the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line in Uttarakhand, as per news reports.
The contract is for railway electrification works on a section of the line that is currently under construction.
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project is one of the major railway infrastructure projects being executed in Uttarakhand as part of the Char Dham connectivity programme.
Work Across Multiple Railway Sections
The order includes the supply and installation of rigid overhead catenary systems (ROCS) and flexible overhead catenary systems (FOCS) over about 102.5 track kilometres.
The systems will be installed across tunnels, bridges, station yards, open track sections, and related railway infrastructure.
ROCS is generally used inside tunnels because it occupies less space and requires lower maintenance. FOCS is commonly installed on open railway stretches where conventional overhead equipment is suitable.
Railway Project in Himalayan Region
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line passes through mountainous terrain and has been planned to improve rail connectivity in parts of Uttarakhand.
Road transport in the region is often affected during heavy rainfall and landslides, making rail infrastructure an additional transport option.
According to Siemens, the railway line is expected to provide all-weather connectivity, improve passenger movement, and support transport needs for residents and visitors travelling through the region.
Company's Remarks
Rajeev Joisar, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Ltd's Mobility Business, said the project is being executed in one of the country's most challenging railway environments.
He said the order adds to the company's work in rail electrification and follows earlier installations of rigid overhead catenary systems on railway projects in India. The company did not disclose the execution timeline for the order.
