Reliance Industries has received state approval to invest about ₹1.6 lakh crore (over $17 billion) in a data centre project in Visakhapatnam, as per The Economic Times reports.
The proposal was cleared by Andhra Pradesh’s Investment Promotion Committee and the plan includes both the data centre cluster and a captive renewable energy facility to meet power demand.
The proposed capacity is 1.5 gigawatts, which would make it the largest data centre cluster in India. It is larger than the 1 GW project being developed by Google in the same region.
The project is being planned as a large-scale artificial intelligence data centre cluster, to be built in multiple phases.
In the first phase, a 500 MW data centre is proposed at Polipalli village, with commercial operations expected by October 2028. The second phase will add 1 GW capacity at Bhogapuram by 2030.
The full project is expected to come up near the upcoming Bhogapuram airport, close to Visakhapatnam.
The company has sought around 935 acres for the development. This includes 300 acres for the first phase and 635 acres for the second phase.
Additional land has been set apart for a cable landing station and an 80-acre desalination plant, which will support water requirements for operations.
The project includes a solar and battery storage facility. The approved solar installation has a capacity of 9,000 MW-peak, with output of up to 6,600 MW alternating current.
Out of the total investment, about ₹1.08 lakh crore is allocated to the data centre, while ₹51,300 crore is for the renewable energy project.
Visakhapatnam has seen a rise in data centre proposals in recent months. Sify is setting up a 500 MW facility, while Digital Connexion and Anant Raj Cloud have projects in the pipeline. Proposals have also been signed with RMZ and Tillman Global Holdings.
The state has set a target of 6 GW capacity and has already signed agreements covering about 5.6 GW.
As of April 28, 2026, 12:02 pm, Reliance Industries Ltd share price was trading at ₹1,379.10, up 0.97% from the previous closing price.
The addition of this project increases the scale of planned data centre capacity in Andhra Pradesh, with Visakhapatnam emerging as a key location for such developments.
