NTPC Share Price in Focus; Targets 10 MT Coal Procurement from Commercial Mines in FY27

NTPC Ltd plans to procure around 10 million tonnes (MT) of coal from commercial mines during the six months ending March, as stocks at thermal power plants have declined amid higher electricity demand, according to The Economic Times news report.
The planned purchase will add to coal produced from NTPC’s own blocks. From FY27, the company plans to procure around 10-15 MT of coal each year from commercial mines and produce about 50 MT from its captive mines.
Higher Coal Requirement
NTPC is expected to require around 300 MT of coal in FY27, 11% higher than its estimated requirement for FY26. Most of its coal supply currently comes through fuel supply agreements with state-run miners.
The company began procuring coal from commercial mines in FY25, when it purchased around 4 MT. The increase planned for FY27 would therefore represent a larger role for commercial sources in its overall coal procurement.
Power Demand Pushes Thermal Generation
Power consumption has increased sharply in the first half of the financial year, with cooling and irrigation demand remaining high. Demand during non-solar hours has also resulted in higher generation from thermal power plants.
In September, electricity consumption increased 11.35% year-on-year to 162 billion units. Peak demand crossed 269 GW during the month, which was unusually high for September.
Thermal Plant Stocks Fall
Coal stocks at thermal power plants have declined to 20.6 MT from around 55 MT at the start of the financial year. Stocks stood at about 44 MT in July following the sharp summer demand before falling further between July and September.
The decline occurred despite coal supplies being higher year-on-year. Power demand during the corresponding period last year was lower.
Supply Outlook
The monsoon season is generally a period of lower coal production and dispatch. The report suggests that the government officials expect coal supplies to increase further in the coming weeks.

Conclusion
NTPC’s coal procurement plans come against higher power demand and lower stocks at thermal plants. Commercial mines are expected to account for 10-15 MT of the company’s annual coal purchases from FY27.
