Maruti WagonR Achieves 35 Lakh Production Milestone in India Since Its 1999 Launch

As per news report, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has announced that its popular hatchback, WagonR, has achieved a production milestone of 35 lakh units in India since its introduction in December 1999. With this, WagonR joins Alto and Swift among the select models to cross this mark.

The WagonR, one of Maruti Suzuki's best-selling hatchbacks, has officially crossed 35,00,000 units of cumulative production in India. Manufactured at the company’s facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar, this vehicle stands alongside Alto and Swift in the 35 lakh production club.
The consistent demand and customer trust have significantly contributed to this milestone across more than 2 decades since its debut.
Evolution of the WagonR in India
Launched in December 1999, the WagonR has undergone several transformations. In 2004, it saw the launch of the LPG-powered Duo variant. The 2nd generation arrived in 2010, accompanied by the CNG version.
By 2015, WagonR included Auto Gear Shift and enhanced safety with dual airbags and ABS. The VXi+ variant was introduced in 2017, followed by the 3rd generation rollout in 2019. A minor update was carried out in 2022.

Global Presence and Safety Enhancements
Globally, the Suzuki WagonR was 1st introduced in Japan in September 1993. Apart from India, the model is also produced in Japan, Hungary and Indonesia, and sold in over 75 countries. As of August 2025, the WagonR achieved 1 crore global sales.
The current Indian WagonR is built on the 5th-generation HEARTECT platform and comes equipped with safety features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, and Electronic Stability Program.
Technological Features in the Latest WagonR
The newest variant of the WagonR is enabled with a 17.78 cm SmartPlay Studio touchscreen, supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and voice commands. These updates ensure the WagonR remains aligned with current automotive technology trends.
