Maruti Suzuki share price is likely to remain in focus after the country's largest carmaker saw its share of India's passenger vehicle market decline to around 39%, one of the lowest levels in its history.

The drop reflects a major shift in consumer preferences, with buyers increasingly opting for SUVs, premium features and advanced technology over entry-level hatchbacks that have long been Maruti's strength.

While the company continues to post healthy financial performance, growing competition from domestic automakers such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra is reshaping India's passenger vehicle market.

SUVs and Premium Features Reshape Consumer Demand

For decades, Maruti Suzuki dominated the Indian automobile market by offering affordable, fuel-efficient cars. However, as incomes have risen, buyers have increasingly preferred SUVs equipped with features such as sunroofs, large infotainment screens and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

According to a Reuters report, Maruti was slower than its rivals in introducing many of these features. The company launched sunroof-equipped models only in 2022, by which time competitors had already established a strong presence in the premium SUV segment.

Maruti has attributed its declining market share to weakening demand for small cars, a delayed SUV rollout and its decision to discontinue diesel vehicles in 2020.

Maruti Strengthens Product Pipeline to Regain Market Share

Despite the market share decline, Maruti Suzuki remains India's largest passenger vehicle manufacturer. Revenue has more than doubled over the past five years to $19 billion, while profits have tripled to $1.5 billion, reflecting stronger margins.

To regain lost ground, the company is giving greater decision-making authority to its Indian teams, expanding research and development capabilities and reducing product development timelines from 48 months to 36 months.

Maruti also plans to launch seven new SUVs by 2030, featuring premium technologies such as ADAS, sunroofs and larger infotainment systems. The company is also expanding its vehicle testing facilities in India to speed up product development.

Can Maruti Change Consumer Perception?

While Maruti is moving into higher-priced segments, changing its long-standing image as a maker of affordable cars remains a challenge. As per news reports, industry data shows that less than 3% of Maruti's sales come from vehicles priced above $15,500, compared with over 21% for the rest of the industry.

As customer preferences continue to evolve, the company's success will depend on balancing affordability with the premium features that today's buyers increasingly expect.

Conclusion

The decline in market share highlights the changing dynamics of India's passenger vehicle industry rather than a slowdown in Maruti Suzuki's business. With a stronger SUV pipeline, faster product development and increased localisation of decision-making, the automaker is attempting to adapt to evolving consumer preferences. Investors with a demat account tracking Maruti Suzuki share price will be closely watching whether these initiatives help the company regain market share in the coming years.
