HCLTech and Japan’s Rapidus are working together on next-generation semiconductor technology, with two new development centres now open in India, as per the exchange filing. Located in Bengaluru and Hubli, the centres will support Rapidus as it builds its advanced chip manufacturing capabilities in Japan.

The announcement, made on October 26, also includes plans to develop Indian engineering talent to meet Rapidus’ future requirements.

What the New Centres Will Do?

The facilities will focus on specialist work involved in chip development, including mask design, layout design and the tools used to design and manufacture semiconductors. Teams will also work on process design kits and design technology co-optimisation.

These capabilities are intended to complement Rapidus’ operations in Japan as the company works on advanced logic semiconductors.

Building an Engineering Talent Pipeline

The partnership also gives Rapidus access to India’s semiconductor engineering talent pool. HCLTech will work with the Japanese company to build a pipeline of engineers who can support its changing technical needs.

Rapidus CEO Atsuyoshi Koike said the collaboration would help establish dedicated development capabilities in India alongside the company’s work in Japan. HCLTech CEO C. Vijayakumar said the partnership brings together India’s engineering expertise and Japan’s ambitions in advanced semiconductors.
