GAIL (India) Limited has approved a major renewable energy expansion project with plans to develop a large-scale greenfield solar power plant in Uttar Pradesh.  

The project marks a significant step in the company’s strategy to strengthen its clean energy portfolio and diversify beyond conventional energy operations. 

Board Approves 600 MW Solar Project 

The company’s board has approved the setting up of a 600 MW greenfield solar project in Uttar Pradesh.  

The facility will also include a co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 550 MWh, enhancing grid integration and renewable power reliability. 

The project is expected to be commissioned within 15 months from the award of the EPC contract. 

Investment Outlay Of ₹3,294.86 Crore 

The total project cost has been estimated at ₹3,294.86 crore, including interest during construction, taxes, and other associated expenditures. The investment will be financed through a combination of debt and equity. 

The planned capital deployment reflects GAIL’s increasing focus on scaling its renewable energy investments. 

Renewable Capacity Expansion Strategy 

GAIL currently has an operational solar capacity of around 29 MW, which is fully utilised. The proposed project will significantly expand its solar generation footprint and strengthen its position in the renewable energy segment. 

The addition of battery storage also aligns with the evolving industry trend towards integrated renewable-plus-storage infrastructure.

GAIL Share Price Performance 

As of 13 April 2026, GAIL share price closed at ₹153.58 per share, reflecting a decline of 0.32% from the previous closing price.
