BPCL Tests E-Commerce Through LPG Network, Plans Payment Gateway

State-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) is widening its non-fuel operations, with plans to sell groceries and other products through its existing retail and LPG distribution network. As per The Economic Times report, the company is also preparing a payment gateway for transactions at its outlets.
The e-commerce plan is being tested in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, where select LPG distributors have been turned into fulfilment points for customer orders.
LPG Network Used for E-Commerce Pilots
The selected dealerships are stocking groceries, household essentials, FMCG products and consumer durables. Customers can place orders through BPCL's app, with the goods delivered along with LPG cylinders.
BPCL is also using its In&Out stores at petrol pumps as part of the operation. The company is relying on its existing network rather than setting up a separate chain of delivery locations.
A senior industry official aware of the development said BPCL sees scope to use its large customer base and retail network to enter selected parts of the e-commerce market.
Orders Below Initial Expectations
The pilot has produced some results, but the volumes are yet to meet BPCL's initial expectations, the official said. The company faces competition from established quick commerce platforms already operating in the market.
"It is only the starting point," the official said, adding that the initiative had not yet achieved the volumes expected. The pilots are continuing in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
Payment Gateway in the Works
Separately, BPCL is developing a payment gateway that it plans to add to the Hello BPCL app. Customers would be able to make payments through the company's platform when transacting at BPCL retail outlets.
The proposed gateway would add another service to the app, which the company plans to use as part of its wider non-fuel business.
Retail Changes Made Last Year
During the previous financial year, BPCL upgraded its café formats, convenience retail, customer facilities and loyalty programmes. These changes were made as the company added more services at its petrol pumps.
The e-commerce pilot and payment gateway are now being taken up alongside those changes. BPCL did not respond to an email seeking comment on the developments.
