As per The CNBC TV18 news report, Bharat Forge has made its entry into the semiconductor sector, collaborating with 3 of the world’s top 5 chipmakers.  

This development is part of India's broader ambitions to create a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem. 

Bharat Forge's Foray into the Chip Industry 

Chairman Baba Kalyani to CNBC TV18 that Bharat Forge is making strides in the global semiconductor market through strategic partnerships with leading chipmakers.  

These collaborations involve manufacturing parts for lithography machines, essential tools in the chip production process. 

The move aligns with India's push to establish a local semiconductor industry under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which has attracted investment commitments of over ₹1.65 lakh crore across 12 approved projects. 

India Semiconductor Mission and ISM 2.0 

The ISM, initially launched with a ₹76,000 crore outlay, is evolving to encompass various aspects of the semiconductor supply chain, including equipment, materials, and indigenous intellectual property.  

India's strategic focus aims to lessen dependency on imports and enhance its technological capabilities. 

Kalyani highlighted that exports make up almost 40% of Bharat Forge’s defence sales. Additionally, Bharat Forge has obtained its largest-ever army carbine order, signalling strength in its defence sector.

Impact on the Defence Sector 

Kalyani noted significant reforms in India's defence sector, with the company shifting from component-level participation to platform-level involvement.
