In a move to strengthen India's strategic air mobility capabilities, Bharat Forge Limited's Aerospace Division has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Flying Whales, a French-Canadian company specialising in heavy-lift airship technology, as per the exchange filings.
The agreement was formalised at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 by Guru Biswal, CEO Aerospace, Bharat Forge, and Sébastien Bougon, President, Flying Whales.
The collaboration aims to establish the manufacturing, integration and production of Flying Whales–Bharat Forge airships in India.
The initiative supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programmes while seeking to build sovereign capabilities in a strategically important aerospace segment.
The partnership is centred on the LCA60T, a next-generation heavy-lift airship capable of carrying up to 60 tonnes of cargo.
The platform features vertical take-off and landing capability, hybrid-electric propulsion and minimal ground infrastructure requirements, making it suitable for operations in remote locations. It is designed to support military logistics, strategic mobility, and disaster response.
The companies will explore the use of the platform for forward operating base logistics, transportation of oversized equipment, critical military supplies, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, communication relay systems, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations and rapid deployment in remote border regions and difficult terrain.
Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge Limited, said the partnership combines Bharat Forge's engineering expertise with Flying Whales technology to build sovereign capability and strengthen India's strategic mobility, adding that "Airships will redefine how nations move, supply and sustain their forces."
Tanguy Lestienne, Chief Executive Officer of Flying Whales Services, said the collaboration will "build in India, for India and for the world", while supporting high-technology jobs, exports and India's aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
As of 22 July 2026, at 12:34 PM, Bharat Forge Ltd share price was trading at ₹2,189.30 per share, reflecting a decline of 0.57% from the previous trading session.
The MoU brings together Bharat Forge and Flying Whales to jointly develop heavy-lift airships for defence and strategic applications in India. The collaboration combines technology, manufacturing and localisation to support the creation of an indigenous airship ecosystem.
