Balu Forge Industries Limited has marked a major step in its manufacturing expansion with the commissioning of a fully automated, Make-in-India empty shell production line at its new greenfield campus in Belgaum, Karnataka.
Designed and engineered entirely in-house, the line elevates the company’s entry into the large-calibre ammunition category while expanding its long-term role in precision defence manufacturing.
As per the exchange filings, the new facility is built to manufacture 360,000 empty shells a year, covering projectile sizes such as 155 mm, 120 mm, 105 mm and 81 mm. The forging line is powered by advanced robotics, with near-complete automation enabled by FANUC systems.
Every forging cycle runs on a 55-second cycle time, with the entire line operating unmanned through proprietary programming created by Balu Forge’s engineering team.
To create this fully indigenous production line, the company collaborated with more than 18 machinery manufacturers, working jointly on the design and commercialisation of critical systems.
This launch represents a new category within Balu Forge’s defence portfolio, supporting its broader plan to scale advanced machining, forging and high-precision manufacturing for strategic sectors.
The automated line strengthens the company’s capability in complex munitions components, adding to its established presence in precision-engineered products supplied across automotive, aerospace, industrial and energy industries.
Highlighting the significance of the launch, Trimaan Chandock, Executive Director, said,“This advanced empty shell production line opens a new category for us, reflecting our outlook to diversify our capability in the large calibre ammunition projectile category.”
