India’s defence manufacturing landscape has entered a new phase of expansion, marked by record production levels, a sharp rise in exports, and major infrastructure achievements by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The latest announcement underscores the country’s evolving capabilities as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted significant progress in production, innovation, and strategic project delivery.

India’s Defence Output Sees Sharp Rise

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh noted dramatic growth in India’s defence manufacturing over the past decade, emphasising that the nation has moved from heavy import dependence to becoming a rising producer and exporter.

He said India’s defence production had grown from ₹46,000 crore in 2014 to a record ₹1.51 lakh crore, while exports surged from under ₹1,000 crore to nearly ₹24,000 crore.

These remarks were made during the inauguration of 125 BRO infrastructure projects across Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and seven other states.

The projects, consisting of 28 roads, 93 bridges, and four additional works, were completed at a collective cost of ₹5,000 crore.

BRO Strengthens Border Infrastructure

Singh praised the BRO for significant advances in engineering and project execution, noting their contribution to strengthening connectivity in some of the country’s most demanding terrains.

Highlighting BRO’s technological progress, he specifically mentioned the adoption of Class-70 modular bridges, designed and built in collaboration with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers

The BRO’s operational scale was also highlighted through its record ₹16,690 crore expenditure in FY 2024–25, alongside a target of ₹18,700 crore for FY 2025–26.

With rising production, growing exports and an expanding network of strategic border assets, the country positions itself for an even stronger defence and infrastructure trajectory in the years ahead.
