The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has released an advisory cautioning the public about fake notices, forged documents, and fraudulent payment demands made using SEBI’s name. These misleading communications, some circulated via social media, falsely claim to originate from SEBI officials and misuse its logos, seals, and letterheads.

False Claims and Forged Notices Targeting the Public

SEBI highlighted multiple cases where individuals received fake sale certificates or were instructed to pay fines to avoid regulatory action. Certain documents falsely related to PACL properties were also in circulation. The regulator clarified that such documents are not authentic and warned people to be vigilant against such deceptive practices.

Verification Measures and Official Communication Channels

To ensure the authenticity of any SEBI-related communication, the public has been urged to verify documents through the SEBI website, which includes reference numbers or UDINs for official correspondence. Additionally, emails from SEBI are only sent from domains ending in “@sebi.gov.in”. Contact details of SEBI officials should be confirmed through the regulator’s official directory.

Conclusion

SEBI’s advisory serves as a crucial reminder for investors and the general public to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities conducted in its name. By stressing the importance of verifying documents, checking official email domains, and using SEBI’s website for authentication, the regulator aims to protect individuals from falling victim to scams involving fake notices, forged documents, and false payment demands.
