SGB 2020-21 Series I Delivers 208.54% return as RBI Opens Premature Redemption on October 28, 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has declared the redemption price for the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2020-21 Series I, enabling investors to opt for premature redemption effective from October 28, 2026. This move offers substantial returns for early investors, based on gold price averages.
Redemption Pricing and Investor Gains
The RBI has set the premature redemption price at ₹14,159, resulting in an approximate gain of 208.54% from the original issue price of ₹4,589 per gram for online purchasers. This calculation is grounded in the average gold prices from October 23, 26, and 27, 2026, as specified by the guidelines.
Subscribers initially paid ₹4,639 per gram but received a discount of ₹50 per gram when purchasing online, bringing the effective purchase price to ₹4,589. The significant gain of ₹9,570 per gram (₹14,159 - ₹4,589) reflects the difference between the redemption and purchase prices.
For offline purchases who paid ₹4,639 per gram they gained 205.22% at a premature redemption price of ₹14,159.
Implications for Investors
For an investment of ₹1,00,000 in this SGB tranche at the discounted issue price, the redemption value will be about ₹3.09 lakh, excluding the 2.5% annual interest on the initial investment. Investors are advised to factor in the changed tax rules, which from April 1, 2026, require capital gains tax on early redemptions unless held until maturity.
Revised Tax Rules
While holders who subscribed during the primary issuance retain an exemption from capital gains tax on redemption at maturity, this benefit does not extend to early redemptions or secondary market purchases. Consequently, investors should reassess their holding strategies based on these amendments.

Price Calculation Method
The redemption price determination for these bonds follows the RBI’s guideline of using the average closing price of gold of 999 purity over the 3 business days before redemption, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd.
Conclusion
The SGB 2020-21 Series I offers a 208.54% return on premature redemption at ₹14,159 per unit. Issued at ₹4,639 per gram, online purchasers benefited from a discounted price of ₹4,589. These bonds also earn 2.5% annual interest, apart from principal gains.
