Introduction to SGB 2020-21 Series VII
Launched on October 20, 2020, the SGB 2020-21 Series VII was issued at ₹5,001 per gram. These bonds are government-backed securities denominated in grams of gold and serve as an alternative to holding physical gold. Upon maturity, the principal and interest are paid back to investors.
Calculating the Redemption Price
The redemption value for these bonds is calculated using the average closing price of 999 purity gold from the previous 3 working days, as reported by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). For this series, the price reached ₹14,614 per unit, reflecting a simple return of 192% over the issued price.
Premature Redemption Details
Investors are allowed to redeem prematurely after 5 years from the issue date. For the SGB 2020-21 Series VII, the date is scheduled for October 19, 2026, with October 20, 2026, being a holiday.
Financial Returns and Investment Value
Between its issue at ₹5,001 per gram and redemption at ₹14,614 per gram, the bond's value appreciation translates to an accrued return of ₹9,613. A ₹1 lakh investment in the bond would thus grow to approximately ₹2.92 lakh, excluding interest payments.
