The redemption price for Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) 2019-20 Series IV has been set at ₹15,173 per unit, allowing investors to realise a 295% profit upon premature redemption. The redemption is subject to tax changes implemented from April 1, 2026, affecting capital gains.

SGB 2019-20 Series IV Redemption Details

Investors in the SGB 2019-20 Series IV have a redemption option set for September 17, 2026, at ₹15,173 per unit.

This price is based on the simple average of the closing gold prices of 999 purity over September 16, September 15, and September 11, 2026, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd.

Originally issued at ₹3,840 per gram for online purchases, the bonds are now yielding a profit equating to ₹11,333, resulting in a 295% return.

Offline investors purchased these bonds at a slightly higher price due to the absence of a ₹50 discount available for digital transactions.

Tax Implications of Premature Redemption

The tax rules for SGBs have undergone changes from April 1, 2026. While capital gains tax exemption is available for holding the bonds until maturity if acquired through primary issuance, it no longer applies to premature redemptions.

Investors who purchased SGBs in the secondary market are subject to tax even when holding until maturity.

Tax Exemption Guidelines

Exemptions from capital gains tax are only applicable to investors maintaining their SGB holdings through to maturity and having participated in the primary issuance.

Premature redemptions invoke tax liabilities, irrespective of when and how bonds were acquired.

Conclusion

The SGB 2019-20 Series IV is set for redemption at ₹15,173, offering a 295% profit based on initial investment. Premature redemption tax changes implemented on April 1 necessitate careful consideration of timing and type of bond acquisition.
