Changing jobs earlier required employees to submit a separate request to transfer their Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) balance from the previous employer to the new one. The process often involved paperwork, approvals, and delays.

To simplify this process, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced an automatic EPF transfer facility for eligible members. The facility is available to Aadhaar-linked and KYC-compliant Universal Account Number (UAN) holders, eliminating the need to submit a separate transfer application when changing jobs.

When Does the Automatic EPF Transfer Happen?

The EPF balance is not transferred immediately after an employee joins a new organisation.

Under the EPFO's automatic transfer mechanism, the process is triggered only after the new employer deposits the first EPF contribution into the employee's new PF account. Once this condition is met, the transfer is processed automatically for eligible members.

Who Is Eligible for Automatic EPF Transfer?

The automatic transfer facility is available to employees whose EPF accounts are directly managed by the EPFO and who meet the following conditions:

  • UAN is activated and linked with Aadhaar.

  • KYC details are updated and verified.

  • PAN and bank account details, including the correct IFSC, are linked with the UAN.

Meeting these requirements helps ensure that the automatic transfer is completed without additional intervention.

Who Cannot Avail the Automatic EPF Transfer Facility?

Employees working with organisations that maintain private or exempted provident fund trusts are not eligible for the automatic EPF transfer facility.

In such organisations, the employer manages the provident fund through its own trust instead of the EPFO. Although these trusts must comply with the rules prescribed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Income Tax Department, they are not covered under the EPFO's automatic transfer mechanism.

How to Check Your Employment History on the EPFO Portal

Employees can verify their previous employment records through the EPFO Unified Member Portal by following these steps:

  1. Log in using your UAN and password.

  1. Authenticate using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

  1. Navigate to the 'Service History' section.

  1. View or download your employment records to verify previous employer details.

Checking your service history can help ensure that employment records are updated correctly before the EPF transfer is processed.

Conclusion

EPFO's automatic EPF transfer facility has simplified the process of transferring provident fund balances after a job change for eligible employees. As long as the UAN is Aadhaar-linked, KYC is complete and the new employer deposits the first EPF contribution; the transfer can take place automatically without submitting a separate application.
