On June 24, 2025, marking the 13th Passport Seva Divas, EAM S. Jaishankar launched Passport Seva 2.0 and e-Passports, ushering in a modern, citizen-focused upgrade to India’s passport services.
PSP Version 2.0 brings a complete overhaul of the passport service delivery system across the country. With advanced technologies for data management and automation, the new system promises smoother processing, reduced wait times, and enhanced user experiences. The rollout also includes pilot testing at Indian missions abroad under Global PSP V2.0, aligning with India’s commitment to supporting its diaspora.
India now joins the ranks of nations offering e-Passports equipped with embedded contactless chips. These next-generation passports enable faster immigration processes and significantly enhanced security features. Citizens using e-Passports can expect quicker clearance at international entry and exit points, improving their travel experience while ensuring data protection integrity.
Over the past year, 10 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) have been inaugurated, including the landmark 450th POPSK in Kushinagar. This expansion aims to improve reach, particularly in remote and underserved regions. In addition, mobile van passport services have brought passport facilities directly to citizens who previously lacked easy access.

A significant development under PSP 2.0 is the streamlined police verification process via the mPassport Police App. This technology integration has cut verification time to 5 to 7 days in 25 states and union territories, dramatically expediting the overall issuance process of passports.
Underlining the national impact of these reforms, Jaishankar highlighted that passport issuance has risen from 91 lakh in 2014 to 1.46 crore in 2024. This reflects increased accessibility and efficiency. These upgrades empower Indian workers and professionals to explore global opportunities with fewer obstacles, contributing to India’s expanding international workforce footprint.
The full-scale implementation of Passport Seva Programme 2.0, the introduction of e-Passports, and infrastructural expansion represent a significant leap towards modernising India’s passport services. It emphasises tech-enabled governance and aims to provide faster, safer, and more efficient travel documentation for all citizens, aligning with India’s vision for a Viksit Bharat.
