Nippon India Mutual Fund has become the first asset management company (AMC) in India to cross 4 crore investor folios, as per The Economic Times news report.

According to data released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the fund house had 4.02 crore folios as of 30 June 2026.

The AMC also reported 2.41 crore unique investors, accounting for 39% of the country's total mutual fund investor base. The industry as a whole had 6.19 crore unique investors and 27.86 crore folios at the end of June 2026.

Industry Participation Continues to Widen

AMFI data shows mutual fund investments now reach all districts in India and cover 97% of PIN codes. The difference between the number of folios and unique investors indicates that many individuals hold investments across multiple schemes or fund houses rather than maintaining a single account.

Assets under management (AUM) for the mutual fund industry stood at ₹82.22 lakh crore as of 30 June 2026, nearly six times the level recorded a decade ago.

Despite this growth, the number of unique investors remains a small share of India's population of more than 1.4 billion.

Top AMCs by Folio Count

After Nippon India Mutual Fund, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund had 3.18 crore folios, followed by HDFC Mutual Fund with 3.11 crore and SBI Mutual Fund with 2.24 crore.

UTI Mutual Fund reported 1.42 crore folios, while Axis Mutual FundTata Mutual FundKotak Mahindra Mutual FundAditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund and DSP Mutual Fund also featured among the top 10.

Together, the 10 largest fund houses accounted for 19.94 crore folios, representing 71.6% of the industry's total folios. The remaining AMCs contributed 7.92 crore folios, or 28.4% of the total.

Management Comments

Sundeep Sikka, Managing Director and CEO of Nippon Life India Asset Management, said the milestone reflected the confidence of investors in the fund house.

He added that the company continues to channel household savings into capital markets and manages India-focused investment funds that provide Japanese retail and institutional investors with exposure to Indian markets.

Conclusion

Nippon India Mutual Fund's 4 crore folio milestone comes as mutual fund participation continues to rise across the country. AMFI data also shows further scope for industry growth as investor penetration remains relatively low.
