As per Reuters, US-India trade talks scheduled for August have been called off. A planned visit by American trade officials to India between 25-29 August has been cancelled.

As per the report, the discussions, centred on a potential bilateral trade agreement, are now expected to be postponed to a later date yet to be confirmed.

Tariff Escalation

Earlier this month, citing India's ongoing imports of Russian oil, President Donald Trump announced a new 25% tariff on Indian goods. The measure, which will take effect on August 27, will raise duties on some Indian exports to as much as 50%, making them among the highest imposed on any U.S. trading partner.

Stalled Negotiations

As per reports, the negotiations fell through after 5 rounds of talks failed to resolve disagreements. The main points of contention were India's agricultural and dairy markets, along with pressure from the United States for India to stop importing oil from Russia. India's Foreign Ministry has stated that the country is being unfairly targeted, noting that the U.S. and E.U. are still buying goods from Russia.

Conclusion

The cancellation of August’s US-India trade talks delays progress on a bilateral deal, while steep new US tariffs, linked to India’s Russian oil imports, escalate trade friction. With unresolved disputes in agriculture and energy, relations face further strain.
