Supreme Court Postpones Vodafone Idea Hearing on AGR Dues to September 26; Share Price Surges over 10%

Vodafone Idea’s legal battle over its ₹9,450 crore additional AGR dues remains unresolved as the Supreme Court postponed the hearing to September 26, 2025. At the heart of the matter is the dispute concerning legacy dues and alleged miscalculations in the Department of Telecommunications' demand against the telecom operator.
Vodafone Idea vs DOT: Legal Showdown Over AGR Dues
On September 19, 2025, the Supreme Court deferred hearing Vodafone Idea's plea challenging the Department of Telecommunications' demand of ₹9,450 crore in additional Adjusted Gross Revenue dues. The telco contends the calculation contradicts earlier court rulings made in July and September 2020 that capped liabilities till FY17 and disallowed reassessment.
Disputed Amounts and Breakdown
Of the total ₹9,450 crore demand, ₹2,774 crore pertains to the post-merger Vodafone Idea entity, while ₹5,675 crore relates to pre-merger liabilities of the Vodafone Group. According to the company, the calculations include duplications and clerical errors, prompting a request for full reconciliation, particularly for dues before FY17.
Government's Infusion Complicates Case
The Solicitor General stated that, considering the government now holds a 49% equity stake in Vodafone Idea, a mutually agreeable solution might be necessary. He added that significant changes in circumstances since the last litigation warrant some judicial indulgence by the apex court.

Company’s Legal Stand on AGR Discrepancies
Vodafone Idea asserts that the new demand issued via letter dated August 13 ignores settled computations. The firm highlighted double-counting in revenue and contended that the DoT is barred from raising fresh claims without fixing prior issues. The total includes ₹5,606 crore for license fees up to FY17 and spectrum usage charges, potentially increasing the amount to ₹6,800 crore.
Vodafone Idea Share Price Performance
On September 19, 2025, Vodafone Idea share price opened at ₹7.91 on NSE, above the previous close of ₹7.84. During the day, it surged to ₹8.42 and dipped to ₹7.81. The stock is trading at ₹8.37 as of 12:05 PM. The stock registered a significant gain of 6.76%.
Over the past week, it has moved up by 2.83%, over the past month, it has moved up by 18.39%, and over the past 3 months, it has moved up by 32.23%.
Conclusion
As the telecom sector watches closely, the Supreme Court’s upcoming verdict will determine whether Vodafone Idea’s claim for reconciliation of AGR dues stands. With the government's stake at play and procedural fairness questioned, the September 26 hearing remains pivotal.
