The BSE Sensex opened the August 31, 2026, session with a negative bias and registered an intraday high of 77,177.27 soon after opening. The index later touched an intraday low of 76,751.32. 

BSE Sensex Performance on August 31, 2026 

The BSE Sensex opened below its previous close at the 77,130.73 level and registered an intraday high of 77,177.27. As the session progressed, continuous selling pressure emerged, dragging the index down by over 500 points from its previous close to touch an intraday low of 76,751.32. 

At 11:51 AM, a minor recovery from the lows was observed, and the index was trading at 76,894.26, down by 370.25 points or 0.48% on August 31, 2026. 

Advance Decline Ratio of BSE Sensex 

The advance decline ratio of BSE Sensex remained weak during the morning session on August 31, 2026, as only 4 constituents of the index managed to trade in the green, while a significant majority of stocks which are 26 were trading in the red. 

Top Gainers and Losers of BSE Sensex on August 31, 2026 

The market index recorded mixed movements across its major constituents during the morning session.  

Among the gainers,HDFC Bank (HDFCBANK) led the positive traction with a Last Traded Price (LTP) of 723.90, gaining 3.90 points (+0.54%). It was followed by Bharti Airtel (BHARTIARTL), which rose by 6.95 points (+0.37%) to an LTP of 1,888.95. ICICI Bank (ICICIBANK) maintained a slight positive bias, trading at an LTP of 1,426.80 with a value increase of 1.60 points (+0.11%), while ETERNALrounded out the gainers at an LTP of 328.00, ticking up by 0.25 points (+0.08%). 

Conversely, severe selling pressure was observed among the top losers. Tata Steel (TATASTEEL) dropped the sharpest in percentage terms, falling by 4.10 points (-2.20%) to an LTP of 182.10. Infosys (INFY) also faced notable corrections, shedding 23.20 points (-2.03%) to reach an LTP of 1,120.45. Aviation major Interglobe Aviation (INDIGO) lost significant absolute value, decreasing by 102.15 points (-1.97%) to trade at an LTP of 5,080.35, while power generation giant NTPC slid by 6.20 points (-1.87%) to cross an LTP of 325.30. 

Conclusion 

On Monday, August 31, 2026, the BSE Sensex traded with notable losses of 0.48% by midday. Despite minor recovery attempts from its low of 76,751.32, the market sentiment remained weak, heavily weighted down by top index constituents like Tata Steel and Infosys.
