The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Shri Sanjay Kumar Hansda as Executive Director (ED) with effect from March 3, 2025. Before this, he was working outside India on deputation (a temporary posting) as a Senior Advisor to India’s Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He has now returned to the RBI on October 6, 2025, after finishing his work at the IMF
Shri Sanjay Kumar Hansda brings with him extensive experience of over 30 years in central banking, economic research, and financial policy. Before his promotion to Executive Director, he served as Adviser in the Department of Economic and Policy Research. His previous roles also include serving as Adviser in the Monetary Policy Department and as Officer-in-Charge/Director of the Internal Debt Management Department.
He also had a tenure as Analyst (Financial Stability) at the Bank of England during a secondment from the RBI, contributing to global financial system analysis and policy formulation.
Throughout his career, Shri Hansda has contributed to multiple areas, including banking sector research, interest rates, credit, liquidity management, growth, inflation, and financial markets. His expertise extends to sovereign and sub-sovereign debt management, G-20 policy coordination, and inter-regulatory cooperation. He has also served on committees of the Bank of England, the Committee on the Global Financial System (CGFS), and the Government of India, apart from several internal and external working groups.

As Executive Director, Shri Hansda will oversee the Department of Economic and Policy Research, a key division responsible for macroeconomic analysis, monetary policy inputs, and financial research within the RBI. His appointment reflects the central bank’s continued emphasis on strengthening policy-oriented research and analytical capabilities.
Shri Hansda holds a postgraduate degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a diploma in financial services management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, University of Mumbai.
With Shri Sanjay Kumar Hansda’s appointment as Executive Director, the RBI reinforces its leadership strength in economic and policy research. His vast experience in monetary policy, debt management, and international financial coordination positions him to contribute significantly to the central bank’s ongoing policy initiatives and research excellence.
