Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has stepped up its infrastructure push with a dual announcement this week. The company not only won a major inter-regional transmission project connecting the southern and western grids, but also sanctioned fresh investments worth ₹705.51 crore to enhance national grid operations and improve disaster preparedness.

POWERGRID Wins SR–WR Transmission Project

On September 29, 2025, POWERGRID received the Letter of Intent (LoI) after being named the successful bidder under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process for the Inter-Regional Strengthening between SR Grid and WR Grid project.

The venture will be executed on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model and involves setting up 765 kV double-circuit transmission lines across Karnataka and Maharashtra, together with associated line bays at both ends. Once operational, the project will help strengthen inter-state power flows and improve grid stability.

Fresh Approvals for ₹705.51 Crore Projects

At its meeting on September 26, 2025, POWERGRID’s Committee of Directors on Investment in Projects cleared two key infrastructure proposals.

The first project, worth ₹209.68 crore, will establish a Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) communication system across all five regional grids—Northern, North Eastern, Southern, Western and Eastern. Slated for commissioning by 23 August 2026, this upgrade is expected to significantly improve coordination and efficiency in managing the national transmission network.

The second project, carrying a budget of ₹495.83 crore, will see the procurement of 20 sets (300 towers) of an Emergency Restoration System (ERS) under the Make in India programme. Designed to provide quick recovery from natural disasters or infrastructure breakdowns, the ERS is scheduled for commissioning by 19 April 2027.
