Petrol Vehicles Inventories Build Up at Dealerships as Buyers Shift to CNG, EVs; Diesel Demand Rebounds Amid E20 Concerns

Passenger vehicle sales remained stable in July, but dealerships reported a noticeable change in the fuel choices made by customers, as per The Moneycontrol news report. CNG and electric vehicles continued to gain share, narrowing the gap with petrol models.
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), alternate fuel vehicles accounted for 40.59% of retail sales in July 2026, while petrol vehicles accounted for 41.68%. A year earlier, the gap between the two categories stood at 13 percentage points.
Unsold Petrol Vehicles Continue to Increase
The changing demand has left more petrol vehicles waiting for buyers. Passenger vehicle wholesale dispatches stood at 4.69 lakh units in July 2026, compared with retail sales of 4.16 lakh units. The difference of more than 52,000 vehicles has added to inventory at dealerships.
FADA said over one-fourth of passenger vehicle inventory has remained at dealerships for 60 to 70 days or longer. Under normal conditions, inventory is held for around 30 to 33 days, while the association recommends keeping stock at about 21 days.
Its internal survey also showed ageing inventory has increased to around 25% of dealer stock, compared with the historical range of 5-10%.
Diesel Demand Moves Higher
Diesel vehicles accounted for 17.73% of passenger vehicle retail sales in July, up 1.4 percentage points from the previous month. Dealers said enquiries for diesel vehicles have increased in recent weeks.
The absence of ethanol blending in diesel has influenced some buying decisions, while demand for diesel-powered SUVs has remained steady because of their fuel efficiency and suitability for longer-distance travel.
Discounts Continue Across Petrol Models
Dealerships continue to rely on manufacturer-backed discounts to reduce inventory. Several petrol models are available with benefits of up to ₹95,000, while selected 2025 model-year vehicles are carrying discounts exceeding ₹1.5 lakh.
These offers have supported retail sales, but dealers said inventory levels remain higher than the industry norm.

Passenger vehicle demand remained steady in July, but the mix of fuel choices continued to change. Higher demand for CNG, EVs and diesel vehicles has increased petrol inventory at dealerships, while wholesale dispatches remained ahead of retail sales.
