India’s Auto Retail Sales in July 2026 Hit Record 25.91 Lakh Units; Rural Markets Lead Growth

India's automobile retail market recorded its highest-ever July sales, with 25,91,138 vehicles registered during the month, according to The Business Standard news report citing the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
July Sales Rise Across All Segments
Retail sales were 25.89% higher than a year earlier, while remaining almost flat compared with June 2026, declining by 0.16%. Every major segment, two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and wheeled construction equipment (WCE) reported its strongest July 2026 performance so far.
The year-on-year increase also reflected a lower base. Retail demand in July 2025 had remained subdued before GST rate changes announced later that year, when several manufacturers reduced vehicle prices.
Rural Markets Continue to Lead
Rural markets accounted for a larger share of the growth seen during the month. Passenger vehicle sales in rural areas increased 24.72% year-on-year, compared with 15.76% in urban markets.
Commercial vehicle registrations rose 29% in rural India against 19% in cities. In the two-wheeler segment, rural sales were up 29%, marginally ahead of the 28% growth recorded in urban centres.
Dealers attributed the improvement to better availability of retail finance, lower ownership costs after GST revisions, and seasonal demand in rural markets.
Two-Wheelers Remain the Largest Segment
Two-wheeler registrations reached 18,18,289 units, up 28.25% from a year earlier, making it the first July 2026 in which sales crossed the 18-lakh mark.
Passenger vehicle retail sales rose 19.13% to 4,16,555 units, while commercial vehicle registrations increased 24.04% to 99,666 units, close to the one-lakh level. Dealers noted that freight activity linked to cement, steel, mining and e-commerce supported commercial vehicle demand, although purchases of school buses slowed.
Three-wheeler sales rose 16.16% to 1,33,778 units, while tractor registrations increased 28.10% to 1,17,349 units, with both categories reporting their highest July 2026 volumes.
EV Penetration Improves
Electric vehicle registrations touched a monthly record of 3,27,901 units. Overall EV penetration rose to around 12.7%, compared with 9.6% in July last year.
Electric models accounted for 11.2% of two-wheeler sales and 65.08% of three-wheeler registrations, while the share of electric commercial vehicles increased to 3.57%.
