NTPC-SAIL Power Supply Company Limited (NSPCL) commissioned the first floating solar power project in Chhattisgarh on September 23, 2025. Reportedly, the 15 megawatt (MW) plant has been set up at the Maroda-1 reservoir in Bhilai Steel Plant township, located in Durg district.
The project has been built at a cost of ₹111.35 crore. Spread across 80 acres of the reservoir, it is expected to generate around 34.25 million units (MU) of electricity each year. The entire power generated will be used by Bhilai Steel Plant as captive power.
According to the reports, the project will reduce coal consumption by nearly 23,000 tonnes annually. It is also expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 28,400 tonnes per year. The floating solar panels will additionally help conserve reservoir water by reducing evaporation.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by officials from SAIL, NTPC, NSPCL, and CISF. Activities included the unveiling of the inauguration plaque, planting of saplings, and release of balloons. The event took place at the reservoir site inside the Bhilai Steel Plant township.
NSPCL has indicated that after performance assessment of the Maroda-1 installation, a similar project will be considered at the Maroda-2 reservoir. In addition, Bhilai Steel Plant has proposed a 35 MW solar project through NSPCL, with tendering for the plan expected to begin soon.
The floating solar project is also expected to create employment opportunities in the local area. Officials noted that such initiatives reduce reliance on conventional fuel sources while providing power directly to the steel plant.
As of September 26, 2025, 10:19 AM, NTPC share price was trading at ₹338.65, a 0.54% decrease from the previous closing price, while Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) share price stood at ₹134.35, a 1.59% decrease from the previous closing price.
