NSE Chief Ashish Chauhan Rejects Tata Sons Chairman Position Reports; Reiterates Focus on NSE IPO

NSE Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan has denied reports that he is being considered for the Tata Sons chairman’s position. According to The Economic Times news report, the National Stock Exchange said the reports were not based on any information available with the exchange.
The NSE issued the clarification on Sunday following a September 5, 2026, report on the succession race at Tata Sons. Chauhan has also denied the reports, with the exchange describing them as speculative and factually incorrect.
Chauhan Says He Remains With NSE
Chauhan said he remains “fully committed” to his responsibilities at NSE. He also referred to the exchange’s ongoing initial public offering (IPO) and listing process.
Chauhan is one of NSE’s founding executives and has been associated with India’s capital markets for several years. His name was mentioned in reports about possible candidates for the Tata Sons chairman’s post.
3 Names in Reported Succession Race
The September 5, 2026, report named Chauhan, Tata Steel CEO and MD T V Narendran, and Tata Sons Executive Director and Group CFO Saurabh Agrawal in connection with the succession process.
Narendran has been described as a key contender, while Agrawal’s experience in investment banking and capital allocation has also been cited in the succession discussions. Tata Sons has not announced a successor.
N Chandrasekaran became Tata Sons chairman in 2017 and is serving his second five-year term. He announced last month that he would not seek reappointment when his current tenure ends on February 20, 2027.
Tata Sons Board May Meet on September 17, 2026
The Tata Sons board is likely to meet on September 17 to consider Chandrasekaran’s resignation and decide a fresh date for the annual general meeting (AGM), which was adjourned on August 18.
The AGM is expected to consider several matters, including Chandrasekaran’s directorship. The meeting can be reconvened only after Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) gets relief from a restraining order imposed by the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner in May.
SRTT holds a 23.56% stake in Tata Sons. The August 18 AGM was adjourned after the restrictions affecting the trust impacted the shareholder representation required to meet the quorum.
