In anticipation of massive festive crowds, the Northern Railway has announced a temporary halt on the sale of platform tickets at key stations across Delhi and NCR, as per the news reports.

The move, effective from October 15 to 28, 2025, aims to ease congestion and ensure smooth passenger movement during the Diwali and Chhath Puja travel season.

Temporary Suspension to Control Overcrowding

The restriction applies to 5 major stations, New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar, and Ghaziabad, all of which experience some of the heaviest footfalls during the festival period. This preventive measure is essential to maintain order and safety at platforms as passenger volumes surge.

As per the news reports, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Northern Railway, stated that the decision has been made “to prevent overcrowding at stations, keeping in mind the increase in passengers.” The railways anticipate record-breaking footfall as families and workers travel home for celebrations across northern India.

Special Provision for Accompanying Passengers

While general ticket sales are paused, the railway authority has made provisions for certain categories of passengers requiring assistance. “However, persons accompanying senior citizens, Divyangjans, illiterate, or lady passengers may approach the enquiry office for a platform ticket,” added Upadhyay.

This selective allowance ensures that those who genuinely need assistance can still access station premises, balancing public convenience with crowd management.
