NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has achieved a significant industry distinction by becoming the first Indian company to be granted the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification under IS 18384:2023. The licence covers Hot Rolled Steel Strip, Sheet and Plates used in Welded Steel Pipe for Pipeline Transportation Systems.
The IS 18384:2023 certification signifies compliance with stringent technical, performance, and safety criteria for pipeline-grade steel meant for the petroleum and natural gas sectors. The certification was conferred during the BIS World Standards Day 2025 event at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium in Raipur. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai presented the award to Amrit Narayan, Chief General Manager (Steel) of NSL.
This BIS licence positions NMDC Steel as a frontrunner in delivering domestically produced steel for critical infrastructure. The recognition supports India’s energy sector by ensuring the availability of BIS-certified pipeline steel, reducing dependency on imports and securing energy infrastructure projects.
The company’s achievement reflects a commitment to technological excellence and eco-friendly manufacturing practices. The certified steel meets rigorous quality benchmarks, ensuring durability and performance in pipeline applications, particularly in high-pressure environments typical of gas and oil transport.
