Ministry of Defence Signs ₹770 Crore Radar Contract with BEL for Indian Army

The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth approximately ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar (LLLR-I) systems, as per a PIB announcement.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on 21 October 2026 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The radars are to help the Indian Army detect and track aerial targets, including fighter-sized aircraft and mini and micro drones.
Radar Overview
The LLLR-I system can detect and track fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones. It also has a target-prioritisation feature that allows it to prioritise aerial targets.
The system is designed to address different types of aerial threats, including smaller unmanned aircraft. Its ability to track these targets is relevant to the Army’s requirement to monitor unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
Focus on Drone Threats
The Ministry of Defence stated that the radar system would enable the Army to counter threats posed by unmanned aerial systems. The inclusion of mini and micro drones among its detectable targets reflects the range of aerial objects the system is designed to track.
The target-prioritisation capability is another feature of the radar. Alongside detection and tracking, it allows aerial targets to be prioritised, although the Ministry’s announcement did not provide further technical specifications or details about how the system would be deployed.
Procurement and Government Priorities
The contract places BEL as the supplier for the radar procurement, with the agreement valued at approximately ₹770 crore. The Ministry did not provide details of the number of radar units to be procured, delivery schedules or the expected completion date.
The procurement is aligned with the Government’s vision of Viksit Bharat. The announcement, however, did not specify the production schedule or provide a breakdown of the contract value.

Conclusion
The ₹770 crore agreement covers the procurement of Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar systems from BEL for the Indian Army.
The radars are capable of tracking fighter-sized targets and mini and micro drones, with target prioritisation intended to support efforts to counter unmanned aerial threats.
