Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) has partnered with US-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) to build advanced combat drones in India.

The collaboration supports the Ministry of Defence’s 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) programme, with L&T as the prime bidder and GA-ASI as the technology partner.

Boosting Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

The initiative focuses on technology transfer and aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India missions by enhancing local production capabilities in the defence sector.

The MALE RPAS to be produced under this programme are part of GA-ASI’s MQ-series RPAS family, known for their proven performance across global surveillance and strike missions.

However, L&T has not revealed the project’s financial details or the proposed site for the manufacturing facility.

Enhancing India’s Defence Capabilities

"This partnership offers India a unique opportunity to manufacture state-of-the-art unmanned platforms indigenously," said L&T Chairman and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan.

"By combining GA-ASI’s proven technology with L&T’s robust manufacturing expertise, we aim to deliver cutting-edge MALE RPAS solutions that will enhance the operational readiness of the Indian armed forces and contribute to a strong, sustainable defence ecosystem in India," stated Vivek Lall, Chief Executive of General Atomics Global Corp.

GA-ASI, a leading global supplier of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, produces renowned models such as Predator, MQ-9A Reaper, MQ-1C Gray Eagle, MQ-20 Avenger, and MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian.
