Jio Platforms plans to move to sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications through software upgrades instead of building a new network infrastructure, as per news reports.

Managing director Akash Ambani shared the plan at the company's IPO press conference on October 15, 2026. The company intends to use its existing network for the transition.

This approach would avoid the need to repeat the large-scale infrastructure deployment carried out for previous generations of mobile technology.

JIO’s Existing Telecom Infrastructure

Jio's network has more than 360,000 telecom towers and over one million route kilometres of fibre. The company plans to use these assets as it works towards 6G.

According to Ambani, Jio has filed more than 7,220 patents and employs over 12,000 engineers. Its technology work covers mobile networks, broadband, devices, operating systems and digital applications.

Four Areas of Business Growth

Jio has identified four areas for business growth: mobility, home broadband, enterprise services and monetisation of its core technology stack.

The company is also developing its own technology for use within and beyond its network. Its plans extend to digital services and partnerships with other telecom operators, alongside its existing connectivity business.

JIO’s Expansion into Overseas Markets

Jio Platforms intends to take its technology to international markets through partnerships with telecom operators in developed and developing economies.

Ambani said the company wants to work as a managed-services partner, providing an end-to-end technology stack rather than operating only as a vendor or software-services provider. Jio plans to choose partners based on the potential for meaningful financial returns.

The company has also outlined an ambition to increase India's technology exports and reduce its dependence on imported solutions.

Details of specific international partnerships and the financial targets for this business have not been provided in the information shared.
