
Retail vehicle sales in India rose 25.62% year on year in February, with registrations reaching 24.09 lakh units, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.
The figures cover retail registrations across major vehicle categories including 2-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and tractors.
The association described February as a notable month for the auto retail market, as sales increased across most segments.
The 2-wheelers segment accounted for the highest share of vehicle registrations during the month. Retail sales stood at 17,00,505 units, a 25.02% increase from February last year.
Demand rose in both urban and rural markets. Urban registrations increased 28.96%, while rural markets recorded 22.16% growth compared with the previous year.
2-wheelers continue to represent the largest portion of vehicle retail sales in the country.
Passenger vehicle sales also increased during the month. Retail registrations reached 3,94,768 units, a 26.12% rise year on year.
Rural demand expanded faster than urban markets. Rural passenger vehicle sales grew 34.21%, while urban markets recorded 21.12% growth. Dealers reported continued demand for sport utility vehicles and other utility vehicles, which contributed to overall volumes.
Retail sales of commercial vehicles stood at 1,00,820 units, registering 28.89% growth compared with February last year. Dealers reported improved freight availability and ongoing infrastructure activity supporting demand in the segment.
3-wheeler sales increased 24.39% year on year during the month. Tractor sales recorded the highest growth among all categories, rising 36.35%, while the construction equipment segment declined 1.22% from the previous year.
Passenger vehicle inventory levels declined slightly during the period. Dealer stock reduced by around 5 days, bringing inventory levels to approximately 27 to 29 days.
According to the association, 75.51% of dealers expect sales to grow in March, while 19.90% anticipate stable demand and 4.59% foresee a decline.
