India's electric vehicle exports increased sharply in the June 2026 quarter, with overseas shipments rising to 15,641 units from 1,122 units in the same period last year, according to The Economic Times report citing industry data.

The quarterly volume represented more than half of the 28,652 EVs exported during the entire previous financial year.

The increase coincided with rising fuel prices in several global markets following the US-Iran conflict, leading to stronger demand for electric vehicles in a number of countries.

Maruti Suzuki Contributes Majority of Exports

Maruti Suzuki accounted for most of the export volume through the e-Vitara, which was shipped to 47 countries during the quarter. The company exported 15,210 units of the model and added 20 new international markets, largely across Europe. The UK was the largest destination, followed by South Africa.

The e-Vitara also became India's third-most exported passenger vehicle during the quarter. It ranked behind the Maruti Fronx (23,803 units) and Jimny (21,840 units).

Other leading export models included the Hyundai Grand i10 (14,282 units), Baleno (11,163 units), Dzire (10,798 units), Nissan Magnite (10,765 units) and Swift (9,598 units).

Automakers Prepare for Larger Overseas Presence

Maruti Suzuki noted that it exported nearly 125,000 vehicles across all models to around 120 countries during the first quarter. The company has also shipped over 40,000 e-Vitaras since exports began and plans to introduce four more electric vehicles by 2030.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles is also expanding its export plans. The company has announced an investment of up to ₹40,000 crore over 5 years to increase annual production capacity to 1.3 million vehicles by FY31, from about 900,000 vehicles at present. It also plans to expand its electric vehicle portfolio from six to ten models, while preparing for exports to markets including the UK.

Mahindra & Mahindra is developing export versions of the BE 6 and XEV 9e for the UK and is assessing additional right-hand drive markets before expanding further.

Conclusion

Electric vehicle exports accounted for a larger share of India's automobile shipments in the June quarter. Higher overseas demand and expansion into new markets supported the increase in export volumes.
