India's automobile retail sales reached a record 25,31,067 units in May, up 9.55% from 23,10,451 units in the same month last year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The industry recorded its highest-ever May registrations across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and overall retail sales despite seasonal and weather-related challenges during the month.
Electric vehicles accounted for more than 11% of total retail registrations for the first time. FADA said dealers reported higher customer enquiries for fuel-efficient and alternative powertrain vehicles following fuel price revisions in May.
In the 2-wheeler category, EV penetration increased to 9.25%, compared with 6.11% in May 2025, indicating a shift towards electric mobility.
Passenger vehicle sales rose 23.25% year-on-year to 4,02,591 units from 3,26,656 units a year earlier. 2-wheeler registrations increased 7.54% to 18,44,947 units, while 3-wheeler sales grew 3.56% to 1,11,526 units.
Commercial vehicle retail sales climbed 5.29% to 83,823 units, with all major categories reporting higher volumes than a year ago.
Dealers attributed steady demand to purchases linked to the marriage season and continued buying from rural markets. At the same time, heatwave conditions reduced showroom visits in several regions, while shortages of select models affected supplies.
FADA also noted that May remained largely a pre-sowing month because of the delayed progress of the south-west monsoon.
May retail data showed higher vehicle registrations across passenger vehicles, 2-wheelers, commercial vehicles and 3-wheelers. The month also marked a new high for electric vehicle penetration in the Indian market.
