Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has confirmed that India possesses adequate coal reserves to support power generation for 80 days.

This stockpile comes as a strategic move to counteract potential supply disruptions due to the monsoon.

Coal Reserves and Monsoon Challenges

As per PTI news report, Addressing a press conference on June 8, 2026, in Hyderabad, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy stated that India has built up coal reserves sufficient for 80 days.

This preparedness aligns with directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mitigate challenges posed by monsoon-induced supply chain disruptions.

The minister noted that heavy rainfall during the monsoon season could impede coal production, necessitating the need for such reserves.

The government has acted proactively to prevent any power generation shortfalls.

Exploration of Critical Minerals

Besides bolstering coal reserves, the minister highlighted ongoing exploration efforts in critical mineral blocks acquired in Argentina.

Emphasising the importance of critical minerals, he stated that production from these markets should commence as soon as possible.

The government is also facilitating auctions in areas where exploration has been completed.
