Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bengaluru-based Centum Electronics Limited to jointly develop advanced naval navigation systems.
The collaboration aims to enhance manufacturing, onboard integration, modernization, and support India’s push for indigenous defence technology.
On October 8, 2025, GRSE formalised a partnership with Centum Electronics to focus on research and development of cutting-edge naval navigation systems.
The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration in designing and manufacturing components and sub-assemblies, integrating them onboard ships, and conducting trials and testing. The partnership also includes upgrading and modernizing existing navigation systems for the Indian Navy.

This initiative supports GRSE’s commitment to innovation and the Government of India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, promoting indigenous research, development, and production in advanced defence technologies.
Established in 1884 and a Defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, GRSE has a rich history of shipbuilding for the Indian Navy and friendly foreign nations. It was the first Indian shipyard to construct a warship post-independence — the Seaward Defence Boat INS Ajay in 1961.
GRSE operates four distinct shipyards, has built over 800 platforms including 114 warships, and also manufactures pre-fabricated steel bridges, naval guns, and marine diesel engines. The company has received multiple accolades, including the Defence Minister’s Award 2022 and recognition as Best Performing Defence Shipyard of India for four consecutive years.

The MoU with Centum Electronics marks a significant step in GRSE’s ongoing efforts to advance indigenous defence technology.
